Hi Jessica, I agree that it is important to determine whether or not the tutoring is being effective for Tammy especially if her parents are interested in increasing it form three to five times a week. In order to make this determination it might actually be valuable to bring in the tutor to meet with the case team in order to ensure that all are on the same page in terms of supporting Tammy’s learning. This brings to mind the interesting question of the role of tutors in a student’s education. In this instance is the tutor focussing no those areas that are of importance to Tammy’s parents or is the tutor working as an extension and support of the material being taught in Tammy’s classes? As Tammy has been doodling/drawing already in her classes and it does not appear to be assisting her learning, as is apparent by the fact that she is falling behind in her classes, it might be of value to see if her learning is assisted if she were to stop as we have already seen the results of her continuing. Getting her to stop should be done in a supportive rather than authoritarian manner as she needs to see that the team is attempting a new strategy “with” her to support her learning. Also the video did not really show what she was drawing. Perhaps her drawing could be focused to relate to the in-class material that she is hearing as it may help in her retention and ability to focus on the topic at hand.
You have addressed many pertinent areas that might be contributing to Tammy’s problems in school. I too had wondered whether the sketching during class was actually helping her focus, or whether it was just acting as a distraction. She did not seem to be at all engaged in the lesson during her science class. We know from the information provided that she struggles with the written components of her coursework. I wonder if another issue is simply inability to focus due to lack of interest in the subject matter.
One element of Tammy’s case that you did not seem to pay much attention to is the amount of time Tammy spends outside of school devoted to various extra curricular activities. One issue I think needs to be considered is whether Tammy is being overextended outside of school, and how this is relating to her academic performance. She stated in the second video that she seems to need more time than her peers to complete assignments, and that she stays up late each night to try to catch up. I can’t help but wonder if her grades would improve if she were given a bit more free time not only to complete her schoolwork, but also to unwind and socialize with her peers outside of the school.
Anyway, yours was a really good response, and you brought up a few issues I hadn’t considered. I hope you are enjoying your TAB expericnce.
